Understanding Civic Life through different lenses

Understanding civic engagement  This project allowed me to view our civic system as far more complex than a collection of policies or institutions. Observing all four presentations suggested that the issues we studied, whether considering environmental protection, public safety, education, family life, healthcare, or immigration, are continuously intersecting with each other. These topics refuse to stay in their separate areas of focus. Rather, they intersect in ways that impact the opportunities people have, the choices communities make, and the obligations all of us hold as citizens. The presentations helped me understand, that civic engagement is not merely the act of showing up to vote or obeying the laws of a community, but it is about truly understanding the systems in which we live and act as citizens. The first presentation, Group #4, focused on environmental views of the United States compared to certain regions of the world. They presented how cultural styles, valu...
Nel Ryan Philippe Abella Understanding the Civic System Blog In this assignment, our class has learned significant aspects of civic engagement such as environmental protection, family health, school growth, awareness of health services, and immigration and the economy. The overview of all the presentations made me see the way these topics are interrelated to each other and how individual decisions, community activities, and governmental actions affect our daily lives. Through this project, I realized that civic issues do not exist in a vacuum, as they all influence one another. It also made me realize that even though it is important to focus on personal actions, we also need to follow the larger systems and policies that influence our society. The first group (Group 4) has done a very good job in describing the significant environmental regulations and organizations that the United States has established to protect the environment and the health of the population. They hav...

Reflection on communication and public speaking

A reflection on communication skills                                                              by Lys  Rodriguez      Throughout the presentations, I found out that good communication isn’t only talking in front of people. Connecting matters just as much. Being prepared plays a big role too, along with saying things with purpose. As we worked through the sessions, it became clear this skill mixes creativity with practice. Every set brought fresh ideas about staying calm and sounding sharp when sharing thoughts. Each team focused hard on knowing their topic, feeling sure about it, and getting ready for it. This showed me just how much effort it takes to share thoughts clearly. Listening helped me see the real time, structure, and attention needed to speak we...

Final Reflection: A Deeper Understanding of Our Civic System.

Final Reflection: A Deeper Understanding of Our Civic System. Through this project and through hearing about what everyone else did, I learned that literally every single issue connects to another. The environment contributes to safety and healthcare, education acts as a precursor for family and community development, immigration and healthcare relate to our economy and quality of life - it truly is not a domino effect, but one incident comprises every part of our civic system. This project facilitated a greater understanding of how personal decisions and government efforts dictate how we live. Families, Education, and Civic Growth I'll start with my part - the education and family component. We looked at how family involvement facilitates community coherence and student social and educational development. For example, in my my groups discussion , we showed the various resources of home-schooling in addition to government-supported initiatives for families wanting to go the tradit...
Our Commun al  System     For our second presentation in this speech class, our class chose two out of several topics to expand on. Group four  was  the first to  present . T hey informed us about  the  environment , public safety, and economics.   They spoke about how culture and laws  influence  the protection of our atmosphere and emphasized values and strategies we can apply to protect i t.   I learned that many important agencies exist to protect our flora and fauna. These agenc ies often come to  be after  major disasters and pressure from the public. Cultures such as the ones of indigenous tribes  and the Japanese , uphold the tradition  of living in one with nature and respecting it as if it were a person.  Similarly, i n Europe, recycling is widely enforced.  On another note, this group brought  the pollution problem our planet faces to our attention. They  stated  th...

Understanding Social Responsibility

People Matter: Reflections on Civic Action and Social Responsibility For this project, each group focused on crucial aspects of civic life, such as environmental protection, family strength, school improvement, healthcare comprehension, and immigration and the economy. Reflecting on all of the lectures helped me understand how these issues are related and how individual actions, community initiatives, and government policies impact society. This project showed me that civic life is not divided into separate issues. Each area influences the others and understanding these connections is essential to being an engaged and responsible citizen. It also made me see that our role as individuals is important, but we cannot ignore the larger systems and policies that shape our communities. Group 4: Environment, Safety, and the Economy Group 4’s presentation made me realize how much the environment affects everything we do, including our health, food, water, and even the climate. They talke...
