Starting off Public Speaking in my POV - Nel Ryan Philippe Abella
The first group was very clear and helpful in their presentation of the fundamentals of the public speaking. They discussed such critical aspects as gaining confidence, active listening, adapting to the audience and the evolving art of public speaking. What spoke out to me was the section on confidence which intrigued my interest greatly because that is what I struggle the most when it comes to giving a speech in front of people. I admire that they provided simple methods of overcoming anxiety and having clarity while speaking. The listening section revealed that good communication is like a two way situation, this indicates that they are aware of the relationship that exists between the speaker and the listener. Lastly, they explained the reason why you need to change your content and style in order to suit your listeners. In conclusion, the group brought the content simple to comprehend and practical which was done great.
Next up is group two who did a solid presentation, which highlighted the fundamentals of creating or preparing an effective speech. They began by emphasizing why you should have a definite purpose that a narrow goal not only guides what you say but also your manner of saying it and makes sure that the intended message sinks in and is not lost. They were right with their intense research part where they pointed out how credible sources enhance the trust of the audience and enhance the knowledge of the speaker. The entire supporting ideas section was the one that spoke out to me the most as they emphasized how examples, facts and statistics push arguments and make the speech more convincing and makes you sound like you really know what you are talking about. They pinned down the entire organizing and outlining process by stating that a solid outline keeps you on track and makes it easier on the listeners to track and remember the most important points. Overall, this group presented their material in a logical manner and provided practical tips that will assist anyone in enhancing their speaking in public, as well as emphasizing how preparation is essential in making a clear and an effective speech because if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Next up is my group and we talked about a number of strategies that is essential to an effective and killer speech. The importance of being understandable was one of the foundations of credibility and we advised against burying the audience in a lot of slang or using bad grammar and lost words only helps the listener lose their way and cause them to zone out. Media was introduced to enhance the message rather than a mere decoration, this means the charts, short video, audio clips, images or tangible objects to get tough concepts to stick and to ensure the visuals to be clean, readable, and related to the point. Delivery of your speech was emphasized as equally important for example think of clear pronunciation, gestures and body language that supports whatever you are talking about and all this depending on if you are addressing a diverse group of people to ensure that they are paying maximum attention. Being mindful and inclusive is important in respecting the time and need of the audience by taking a pause after each question, pacing the q/a session, and providing notes. Being prepared like carrying flashcards or a tablet or whatever you prefer to use will help you maintain eye contact and remain calm if you are under pressure. In conclusion, my group demonstrated that good speech is not only about what you say but rather how you say it, how you drive the audience to the hook, how you drive the message home, and how you consider everything, the preparation, the clarity, the delivery, and the consideration are all combined to make it a great impression. So I am extremely proud to have this group and being able to work with them.
Lastly we have is group four. Their presentation was very comprehensive and highly informative with topics such as informative speaking, persuasive speaking, audience and delivery, and special speech and setup as well as appropriately covering the strategy of speaking organization. Not only did they give me the tips on how to present information in a clear way during informative speeches and how to convince the audience with persuasive ones, but also highlighted the value of outlining the speech to help people understand it and be engaged. The key features of the discussion were some patterns in organizations: chronological, spatial, topical, narrative, cause-effect structure, which demonstrate how each of the approaches may be adopted to present the ideas clearly, keep the audience engaged and support the message. An example of this is the chronological order is used to make the audience trace a chronology of events and cause and effect arrangement between actions and outcomes. Also their attention to audience and delivery emphasized the importance of changing the speech style, tone, and even body language to suit the expectations of the audience and their discussion of special speeches and setup provided tips that could be useful in the context of ceremonies or motivation. In conclusion, the presentation made by group four was detailed, well structured, and practical and offers helpful strategies that not only improve the content of the speech but also make them sound clear, engaging, and powerful.
Overall, I am very thankful for everyone that presented and contributed to the presentations. I have learned a lot from each of them and hopefully I will be able to use them effectively when I deliver a speech. Speech is not my strongest forte and the presentations gave me an open eye and mind on how to improve my speech. Thank you everyone and Professor Sinkoff for giving us the opportunity to do this.
